The Fruit Basket

The Fruit Basket is a Johannesburg-based national non-profit organisation that works to advance the welfare and rights of LGBTQI+ migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in South Africa. The organisation supports individuals who have been forced to leave their countries of origin due to discrimination and persecution related to sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Recognising that South Africa is one of the few countries globally to grant refugee status on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, The Fruit Basket addresses the practical gaps that many LGBTQI+ migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers face within the asylum and documentation system. Without valid documentation, access to employment, healthcare, education, and social services is often severely limited. The Fruit Basket helps restore dignity and stability by providing assistance with documentation processes, access to information, skills development training, relief support, and referrals to trusted service providers. The organisation also advocates for a more inclusive and rights-based regional approach, working toward a society where all people — regardless of nationality, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or beliefs — can access quality healthcare, meaningful education, and employment opportunities in their host country.

This organisation is located in Cape Town and is part of the city's LGBTQ+ community landscape.
