De Waterkant’s Rainbow Crossing turns pink after vandalism

The landmark pedestrian crossing on Somerset Road in De Waterkant was significantly damaged. Rather than leave it defaced while repairs are arranged, the City has temporarily repainted the crossing solid pink.

De Waterkant’s Rainbow Crossing has temporarily turned pink after being vandalised over the weekend. The Somerset Road crossing was significantly damaged, and the specialised colours needed to restore the full rainbow are not all immediately available. Replacement paint has been ordered and is expected to take around three months to arrive. In the meantime, the City has repainted the crossing solid pink, with the temporary treatment partly inspired by Lisbon’s Pink Street. The intention is to restore the full rainbow design once the required paint arrives. Why this matters: since 2022, the Rainbow Crossing has become a visible symbol of LGBTQ+ inclusion in De Waterkant and Green Point. Its temporary pink treatment keeps that visibility in place while the original design is restored. Source: CapeTown ETC Infogaytion LGBTQNews CapeTown DeWaterkant RainbowCrossing LGBTQSouthAfrica
