New Cape Town Space Opens for LGBTQ+ Muslims

The Al-Ghurbaah Foundation marked the opening of its new permanent community space with An Evening of Legacy & Renewal on 19 September, bringing together queer Muslims, faith leaders, activists, scholars and allies.

Al-Ghurbaah Foundation has opened a new permanent community space in Wynberg, Cape Town, creating a renewed home for queer Muslims and continuing the work of its late founder, Imam Muhsin Hendricks. The opening was marked by An Evening of Legacy & Renewal on 19 September, bringing together queer Muslims, faith leaders, activists, scholars and allies. The new space gives Al-Ghurbaah a permanent base for its community, spiritual and support work. Acting Director Ziyaad Follentine described it as a workplace, a sanctuary and a home for the community, continuing Hendricks’ vision of a place where queer Muslims can reconcile faith with sexuality and gender identity.
