Petition calls on SA to reject Cape Town “Family Values” conference

The 3rd Pan-African Conference on Family Values is scheduled for Cape Town from 12–15 May 2027. LGBTQ+ campaigners say the event forms part of a wider organised movement seeking to roll back LGBTQ+ equality, women’s rights and reproductive freedoms across Africa.

A petition calling on South Africa to reject the planned 3rd Pan-African Conference on Family Values in Cape Town is gaining support. The conference is scheduled for 12–15 May 2027. LGBTQ+ campaigners argue that it forms part of a broader organised movement seeking to restrict LGBTQ+ equality, reproductive rights and protections for diverse families across Africa. The petition calls on government to reaffirm South Africa’s constitutional commitments to equality, dignity and freedom from discrimination, while asking venues, businesses, faith leaders and civil society to consider how they respond to the conference. More than 5,400 verified signatures have been recorded. Why this matters: South Africa’s Constitution explicitly protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation and guarantees equality and human dignity. Campaigners say the planned conference forms part of a wider organised movement seeking to roll back LGBTQ+ equality, women’s rights, reproductive freedoms and protections for diverse families across Africa.
