South African transgender activist, artist and media personality Yaya Mavundla has won the Arts, Film & Media category at the 2026 Mail & Guardian Power of Women Awards. Mavundla, whose work spans arts, advocacy and cultural representation, said the recognition carries responsibility beyond her own achievement. She urged institutions to create lasting opportunities for transgender women, rather than treating a single breakthrough as proof of broader inclusion. The award recognises her work and leadership while opening a wider conversation about whose contributions are celebrated in South Africa's arts and media spaces.
