Hermanus Beaches & Coastline Hermanus is not only a whale-watching town. Its coastline gives you long sandy beaches, smaller coves, tidal edges and a Cliff Path that runs through much of the destination. For a summer trip, the coast can easily become the centre of the day; in cooler months it is still one of the best reasons to spend time outdoors. Hermanus's beaches are public coastal spaces used by locals and visitors. For LGBTQ+ travellers, the appeal is much the same as for the wider destination: swimming, walking, sea views and a relaxed coastal day rather than a dedicated LGBTQ+ beach scene. Grotto Beach Grotto Beach is the obvious choice when you want space. It sits at the eastern end of Hermanus and opens onto a long stretch of sand with mountain views behind it. It works well for long walks, swimming when conditions are suitable, or simply spending a few hours away from the centre of town. Grotto Beach has full Blue Flag status, reflecting standards around water quality, environmental management and beach safety. If you only visit one beach during a short stay, this is the easiest place to start. Voëlklip and the smaller beaches Voëlklip Beach is smaller and closer to the residential part of Voëlklip. Nearby Kammabaai and Langbaai offer more compact stretches of coast and can feel quieter than Grotto. ! Treat local swimming signage and lifeguard instructions as more important than any general recommendation in a travel guide. Walk the Cliff Path You do not need to choose between a beach day and a coastal walk. The roughly 12 km Hermanus Cliff Path runs from the New Harbour along the coastline towards Grotto Beach and the Klein River lagoon mouth, passing many of the town's best-known sea and whale-watching viewpoints. ! A simple coastal day A good low-effort day is to walk part of the Cliff Path in the morning, stop for lunch in town, then spend the warmer part of the afternoon at Grotto or Voëlklip.
