LGBTQ+ Johannesburg: Venues & Nightlife

Johannesburg’s LGBTQ+ nightlife is spread across the city rather than concentrated in one permanent gay village. Melville remains an important social hub, while dedicated men’s venues operate in Ferndale and New Doornfontein. The city’s queer scene is also strongly event-led: travelling parties, collectives and Pride programming regularly take over different spaces rather than relying only on permanent bars and clubs. For dedicated LGBTQ+ venues, Ratz Bar Melville is one of the city’s established queer social spaces, known for cocktails, karaoke and DJ-led nights. The Rec Room in Ferndale is a gay men’s sauna and steam-room complex with a licensed bar and recurring themed nights. The Factory in New Doornfontein is a men-only adult gay venue with a bar and cruise-oriented facilities. Infogaytion lists only venues that operate as actual LGBTQ+ spaces in the core Johannesburg venue directory. General venues that are merely LGBTQ+ friendly are not included as LGBTQ+ venues. Queer events hosted at mainstream spaces can still appear in the Johannesburg events calendar without turning the host building into an LGBTQ+ venue listing.
