Soweto Pride 2026: Our Heritage

Soweto Pride 2026 Soweto Pride returns for its 22nd annual edition in September 2026 under the theme “iSango lenkululeko – Our Heritage.” The programme connects queer visibility with Soweto’s histories of resistance, the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising and three decades of constitutional democracy. This is not simply a festival label. Soweto Pride was initiated by the Forum for the Empowerment of Women FEW in 2004 as a political project creating space and visibility for Black lesbian women. It has since grown to include the wider LGBTQIA+ community, families, friends, civic organisations and allies. The verified 2026 programme 12 September: Black Burns Fast film screening A screening of the South African queer coming-of-age film Black Burns Fast , hosted with FEW, Hola Africa, GALA and Iranti. The programme is intended to create space for reflection, conversation and community connection. Access: By invitation. A public venue and time had not been announced when checked. 17 September: Solidarity Without Borders Storytelling, photography, documentary film and participatory dialogue centred on LGBTQIA+ refugees and migrants. The activity is presented by FEW, PACHEDU, Safe Place International and The Fruit Basket. Access: By invitation. A public venue and time had not been announced when checked. 19 September: Narrative Justice A public programme exploring queer township stories through film, storytelling and dialogue. It is presented by FEW with the House of Ditsie and Kasi to Kasi Queer Cinema, with an emphasis on challenging stereotypes, reclaiming LGBTQIA+ narratives and amplifying community voices. A public venue and time had not been announced when checked. 24 September: Sing & Paint This intergenerational Heritage Day programme takes place at Constitution Hill from 10:00 to 16:00 . FEW, GALA and the UJ Queer Society will use art, music and storytelling to reconnect participants with the grassroots history of Pride. Announced activities include handmade Pride signs, Pride songs and a pop-up Soweto Pride Archive exhibition from GALA. Access: Open to the public. 25 September: Soweto Pride March The march starts at 12:00 from Kwa Lichaba Chesanyama, Vilakazi Street, Orlando West . Under the “Our Heritage” theme, organisers invite participants to wear traditional attire, represent their culture and honour their roots. The march calls for safer communities, access to justice, social cohesion and meaningful implementation of constitutional rights, while honouring LGBTQIA+ people lost to hate crimes. Wear comfortable shoes, plan transport in advance and recheck the organiser’s page before travelling in case route or assembly details change. 26 September: Queer Joy Celebration The Pride month programme closes at Kwa Lichaba Chesanyama, Vilakazi Street, Orlando West . Gates open at 10:00 and the celebration runs until 18:00. The community celebration brings together LGBTQIA+ people, families, allies and supporters through music, culture, entrepreneurship and shared space. Across the main weekend, FEW invites people to show up in their heritage: wear traditional attire, represent their culture, honour their roots and celebrate the diversity that shapes the community. The organiser presents the march and celebration as a gathering in the heart of Soweto to honour shared humanity, cultures, traditions and stories. What “Our Heritage” means in 2026 The announced theme places queer lives inside the story of Soweto rather than treating them as separate from it. The organisers ask whose histories are remembered, how queer activism is carried forward and what freedom should mean in communities still confronting violence and exclusion. That framing is especially significant in 2026, fifty years after the Soweto Uprising. The programme’s films, archive work, storytelling, interfaith discussion, march and celebration each approach heritage from a different direction. Practical planning The main Pride weekend is in Orlando West on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September. Vilakazi Street is also close to Mandela House and the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum, but Pride days will be busier than an ordinary heritage visit. The 24 September event is not in Soweto: Constitution Hill is in Braamfontein, central Johannesburg. Allow separate travel time and do not assume the two venues are close together.
