LGBTQ+ Vanderbijlpark & the Vaal: Pride by the River

Vanderbijlpark has a current, independently organised LGBTQI+ Pride event that gives the Vaal a clear place on Infogaytion’s South Africa map. Vaal Pride by the River takes place on 5 September 2026 at Caravan Park next to Emerald Casino Hotel, with drag performances, DJs, food and a riverside festival atmosphere. The Vaal River is the destination’s main draw. Local and national tourism sources describe the Upper Vaal around Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging as a year-round leisure area for cruises, water sports, fishing, golf, dining and riverside stays. There is also evidence of active LGBTQIA+ inclusion work at Vaal University of Technology, including sexual- and gender-diversity programming and LGBTIAQ support within the institution’s health and wellness work. Visitors should still think of Vanderbijlpark as an event-led queer destination rather than a permanent gay nightlife hub.
